After months of immersive exhibitions, creative workshops, artist residencies, and a rigorous selection process, the Hasanah Gold Threads Awards 2024 concluded with a celebration of talent and innovation at the historic Rumah Tangsi in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month. Co-produced by Tanoti and the ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and Development Association (AHPADA), the second edition drew 158 submissions across six categories: Supplementary Weft, Ikat, Drawing and Stamping, Embroidery and Embellishment, Plaiting, and Beadwork.
Each category highlighted the exceptional artistry and craftsmanship of Malaysian artisans from diverse backgrounds and age groups, positioning the platform as a key driver of sustainable conservation and, most importantly, a catalyst for the creative economy. “The second edition of the HGTA reaffirms our dedication to preserving and promoting Malaysia’s cultural heritage, especially our diverse textile traditions,” said Siti Kamariah Ahmad Subki, Trustee and Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah.
This year, submissions were evaluated on several key criteria: excellence, authenticity, marketability, and innovation. After careful consideration, 20 distinguished local artisans were selected, with the winners in the Best Traditional and Best Innovative categories receiving RM25,000, and Special Mention recipients awarded RM10,000.
Among the major awards is the Hasanah Gold Award, presented to Adiguru Ngot Binti Bi. At 92 years old, she is celebrated for her masterful plaiting and has been honoured as an Adiguru Kraf Negara by Kraftangan Malaysia and a Sarawak Living Legend by the Sarawak State Government. Alongside other awardees, she will have the opportunity to engage in art residencies, fellowship programs, and various exhibitions in the coming years. This enhanced visibility will help them build a broader audience and advance their careers in the heritage textile field. See the full list of award winners below.
