Winning Submissions Of The Hasanah Gold Threads Awards
BANGIE ANAK EMBOL
Ikat
Best Traditional
Intense and well executed natural dye colours on silk threads. This pua kumbu is an original design inspired by a dream, in the tradition of the Iban ‘dream weavers’, of 8 tiang runyai (ceremonial poles) for the 8 motifs of Meni, the weaving goddess; and the heavens with the spirit of Singalong Burung, the God of War.
MUHAMMAD HILMI BIN MUHAMMAD HAFNI
Embroidery & Embellishment
Best Innovative
The art of tekat is well expressed in its fineness in this framed artwork, entitled ‘Flow from Heaven’. The use of religious script, rather than the traditional floral and cloud motifs, combine Malay tradition with Islamic influences and allow such works to be marketed to the wider Islamic world.
NYONYA HERITAGE ART
Beadwork
Special Mention
Framed traditional glass-beaded Nyonya slippers as artwork for decoration, with patterns in two well-paired variations of colour combinations.
ONG WAN FEN & HASMAH BINTI YAMIN
Supplementary Weft
Special Mention
Innovative use of the weaving technique to produce an artwork, entitled ‘Garden Alight’. New fibers - transparent nylon for the back weave, with colours brought in through metallic, dyed filament and dyed spun silk yarns - are used, highlighted beautifully when lit. The interchangeable frames also add flexibility.
RAMSAY ONG LIANG THONG
Drawing & Stamping
Special Mention
This artwork explores the use of batik textile as a collage with other natural material on a tree bark cloth as the main canvas. The sheer batik block still allows the bark cloth to be visible and forms a good background to the painted hornbill.
MANDONA JUSLY
Plaiting
Special Mention
Innovative mat in the use of materials – a brown rattan fiber (wai seledah/ wai bala) traditionally used for building purposes has been utilised by this Penan weaver to substitute yellow rattan, increasingly scarce in the forests. The diagonal design adds a contemporary touch to the piece.
JULIANA ANAK EMBROSE
Beadwork
Special Mention
This beadwork, made with glass beads arranged in traditional Sarawak patterns, is attached to handcrafted bamboo fish-traps to be used as light fittings. Innovation is demonstrated in extending the use of beadwork from dress into interior decoration.
HALMI BIN CHEK
Drawing & Stamping
Special Mention
Innovative use of combination of multiple techniques including batik with linut or sago flour, combined with selective silk-screen and hand-stamping with gold.
CRISNA BINTI MOJUPI
Embroidery & Embellishment
Special Mention
A good example of the traditional double-sided dual colour sigal, made with a technique known as sulaman pis, used in Rungus celebrations. A head piece worn by men – the black side is displayed during the day whilst the orange is usually used at night.
NANCY ANAK NGALI
Ikat
Special Mention
This pua kumbu depicts the sunset wedding of the Indian prince, Raja Tambi, to the Iban princess, Kumang. Inspired by an original pattern by Karama anak Dampa received in a dream, added feature colours of indigo and yellow give a 5 colour composition, from well-excecuted natural dyes on Tencel yarn.
EMIS @ EMMILIANAH BINTI DAHUN
Embroidery & Embellishment
Special Mention
Beautiful and intricate specimen of the sulaman linangkit embroidery needlework of the Dusun Lotud ethnic group. The trademark geometric motif creates a result that remarkably resembles a tapestry weave.
BATIK LINUT SDN BHD
Drawing & Stamping
Special Mention
Eco-friendly alternative use of linut (sago flour) instead of paraffin wax for batik, with pleasing overall textile pattern and colour.
